Terms & Conditions
It is your responsibility to have read the Conditions of Sale prior to purchasing. By purchasing a horse from Cornerwood Stud and Sport Horses you will be bound by our terms and conditions.
1. On receipt of the Purchase Price
Upon the Seller’s receipt of the Purchase Price (as cleared funds):
- The purchaser shall pay the seller a deposit of 10% to hold the horse. The deposit is only refundable if the horse fails the veterinary inspection. Veterinary inspections must take place within 7 working days from the deposit being received, unless otherwise agreed. By failing the veterinary inspection this means that the vet has advised the purchaser that the horse is not suitable for the job they are intending. This would need to be proved by the veterinary report itself.
- The ownership of the Horse shall pass from the Seller to the Purchaser.
- The Seller strongly recommends that the Purchaser adequately insures the Horse (preferably covering third party liability, death, theft, veterinary fees and loss of use) prior to or immediately upon payment.
- Responsibility for any loss, damage or injury whatsoever caused by the Horse shall pass to the Purchaser.
- The Seller will release possession of the Horse to the Buyer or his/her employee/agent together with all original documents.
- The Purchaser (or another person designated by the Purchaser) in coordination with the Seller will arrange for the transportation of the Horse from the Seller’s premises (at the Seller’s and the Purchaser’s convenience) at the Purchaser’s expense.
- Where the Horse is not collected immediately upon ownership of the Horse passing from the Seller to the Purchaser, the Purchaser agrees to indemnify the Seller against all costs incurred in caring for the Horse (veterinary costs etc.) until the horse is collected by the Purchaser or his employee/agent. Any loss, damage or injury howsoever caused by the Horse whilst the Horse is at the Seller’s premises awaiting collection by the Purchaser shall be the Purchaser’s responsibility.
- The Purchaser acknowledges that the Seller makes no representation as to the past, current or future health, fitness, performance, ability or material defects, which the Purchaser acknowledges have been disclosed by the Seller (e.g. splints / unsafe in traffic / weaves / cribs): N/A.
- The Purchaser has inspected the Horse and is satisfied with its health, fitness and ability.
- The Purchaser acknowledges that the Horse is open to veterinary inspection and we strongly advise that all horses are vetted prior to purchase. All veterinary inspections must take place at Cornerwood Stud. In accepting or declining the opportunity to have the Horse inspected by a vet, the Purchaser waives all rights to bring a claim against the Seller in respect of any matter revealed or which should have been revealed by the vet during that inspection.
- The Horse is purchased for the purposes of (delete as applicable): showing / dressage / show jumping / eventing / breeding / hacking / riding club / general riding / companion / other.
- The Purchaser is satisfied that the Horse is suitable for its intended purpose.
- The Purchaser accepts that horses are unpredictable by nature and that horse riding is a high risk sport. The Seller is unable to predict how any horse will mature or develop in new ownership, however the Seller will provide full details of the Horse’s routine and current exercise, feed and tack requirements in order that the Horse has the best opportunity of settling into his new home.
2. Consumer Rights Act 2015
Horses purchased and owned by Cornerwood Stud directly are covered by the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (CRA). The start date of this warranty is the date the funds are transferred, the date of receipt of bank transfer or cash, or the date the horse is collected, whichever is the sooner.
- (a) Cornerwood Stud agrees to exchange the Horse for one of equal quality and value or, if agreed, a full refund will be given. If the purchaser wishes to buy a horse of greater value for themselves they can use the original Horse as part payment.
- (c) If the purchaser does not like anything in stock, Cornerwood Stud will endeavour to get a replacement as soon as possible. This could involve a trip abroad and may take a minimum of 2 weeks.
- (d) The purchaser agrees to be patient during this time. Whilst every effort will be made to satisfy the purchaser’s requirements quickly, it is not always possible to find the perfect match in each case.
4. Resale on the purchaser’s behalf
If the purchaser wishes Cornerwood Stud to take the horse back to sell on their behalf, the following charges will apply:
- Livery charged at the current rate.
- 10% of the sale price.
- If separate sales advertising is required, the costs will be charged to the Purchaser.
- If the farrier or the vet is required, the costs will be charged to the Purchaser.
5. Return and exchange warranty
The following conditions apply to the return / exchange warranty:
- The Horse must be returned in the same condition as it was in when it left the premises.
- All travel costs will be down to the buyer and the exchange must take place at Cornerwood Stud.
- The Horse must not be injured or blemished in any way.
- It must not be freeze marked or have ID brands on its feet or a replacement microchip inserted.
- Cornerwood Stud reserves the right to have a veterinary surgeon inspect the Horse on its return.
In the event of dispute, the matter shall be referred to an independent Equestrian Expert to be agreed by the Purchaser and Seller.
Selling livery
A selling livery is a horse that is not the property of Cornerwood Stud. This will be a horse sold on behalf of a client and this will be stated on the advert of the horse.
If a horse gets injured and requires veterinary treatment the client must pay. We will list all horses on our social media platforms along with our website (we have a huge following of over 10k) free of charge. Any other advertising, e.g. HorseQuest, will be charged to the owner.
If for whatever reason the horse proves to be unsuitable, this will not reside with Cornerwood Stud but must be taken up with the previous owner. However, Cornerwood Stud will hold the funds for one week before transferring to the previous owner.
Trade to trade
Horses sold through business to business contracts will be excluded from Cornerwood Stud’s normal terms and conditions. There will be no returns or refunds for horses which are sold through trade.
Distance selling and your right to cancel
All transport costs for horses sold under distance selling rules will be down to the buyer, including transport to and from Cornerwood Stud.
When this applies. If you are a consumer and you buy a horse from us without meeting us in person at the yard before the contract is made (for example entirely by telephone, email, WhatsApp, video call or through our website), this is a distance contract and the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 apply. This section applies to consumers only and does not apply to trade to trade sales.
Your right to cancel. You have the right to cancel a distance contract within 14 days without giving any reason. The cancellation period expires 14 days after the day on which you, or a person you nominate (other than the carrier), take physical possession of the horse.
How to cancel. To exercise the right to cancel you must tell us of your decision by a clear statement, for example by email to info@cornerwoodstud.co.uk or by telephone on +44 7974 941333 or +44 1424 772484. You must do so before the cancellation period expires. We will acknowledge your cancellation.
Refunds. If you cancel, we will refund all payments received from you, including any delivery charges paid to us, without undue delay and no later than 14 days after the day we are told of your decision. We may withhold the refund until we have received the horse back, or until you supply evidence that you have returned it, whichever is earlier. We will refund using the same method of payment you used for the purchase.
Returning the horse. You must return the horse to Cornerwood Stud without undue delay, and in any event within 14 days of telling us that you cancel. You will bear the direct cost of returning the horse, including transport. You must take reasonable care of the horse while it is in your possession. You are liable for any reduction in the horse’s value resulting from handling beyond what is necessary to establish its nature, health and ability.
Your statutory rights. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights, including those under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Cornerwood Stud lies in the historic town of Battle, within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The yard is reached directly from the A21 and is an hour from Gatwick and around an hour and a half from London.
It sits behind the grounds of 1066 Battle Abbey on 30 acres of well kept grazing. The property includes 5 acres of ancient woodland bordering the RSPB's Fore Wood, where hundreds of acres of woodland and a network of good tracks make for safe and peaceful hacking.
Beyond the woods there are quiet country lanes with open fields and bridleways to explore.
How we can help
Whether you're buying, selling or breeding, Cornerwood offers a full range of services tailored to your horse and your goals.
Sales Livery
Taking horses on a sales livery basis, advertising, enquiries and viewings handled for you, with as much or as little involvement as you like.
We take a small number of horses on sales livery at any one time, so every horse gets proper attention rather than being lost in a big yard. Owners stay as involved as they'd like to be, from hands-off through to regular updates.

Producing & Schooling
Bringing young or green horses on with correct, sympathetic schooling to bring out their best.
Whether a horse is just backed or already competing, we take the time to build confidence and correct the basics before asking for more, no shortcuts, no rushing.
Horses are ridden and assessed regularly throughout their time with us, so progress is honest and owners always know exactly where they stand.

- Correcting confidence or schooling issues
- Flatwork, poles and jumping fundamentals
- Regular ridden assessment and feedback for owners
Breeding & Stud Services
Stallions standing at stud each season, with a small number of spaces for outside mares.
We keep a small, carefully chosen stallion line-up each season rather than a long list, quality over quantity, with limited bookings so every mare gets proper attention.
